[-] gusngiop | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 02:15:16

[-] PutridDistance8503 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 02:18:12

According to the latest data provided by the Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism, the Romanian Revolution of 1989 claimed a total of 5,205 victims, of which 1,116 were killed (only in Timisoara city 50 of those were children!) and 4,089 wounded. Out of the 1,116 dead, 159 victims fell until December 22, at 12.09 (Ceausescu's escape, from the CC headquarters, by helicopter). The highest number of deaths was recorded in Timisoara.

great Romanian people overthrow the evil government

[-] Ljk-Ljk | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 14:45:36

We still have to deal with the second row of old officials and their descendants but the biggest problem that we have (then and now) is the organizations responsible to gathering information under the pretext of protecting the country. Think CIA, MI6, MSS, KGB...Knowledge is power. THEY seized the power, and now the new rich people and officials are from their circle. Doctrines are dangerous but the people who implement them are more dangerous because they create a system and use it for their own interest.

[-] PutridDistance8503 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 14:50:55

politician is hypocrisy,,,sadly

[-] UnderstandingIll211 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 02:39:00

[-] PutridDistance8503 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 02:41:44

[-] OddBird_S | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 02:54:30

[-] Wolnmol | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 16:11:07

[-] f567 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 17:58:12

Hi. Romanian here. This is one of the reasons why the army is held in high regard in Romania.

But this view is now challenged by others. The common belief is that the army didn't fire because they love the people, but the more realistic view is that they didn't fire because they weren't told to fire.

The revolution was immediately taken over by the communists who saw which way the wind was blowing (Romania was the last communist country to have a revolution in 1989) and these communists thought it was better to become a democracy tightly controlled by them. The communist party rebranded as The Social Democratic Party and the number 2 communist became the new president.

If the army selected the most pro-communist soldiers and told to fire, it could have turned out as Tiananmen Square

[-] 5years_simulation | 1 points | Jan 30 2022 16:12:35

Lucky Romania, so sad until today, in China, even talking about what happened in 1989 is illegal. We don't know when our country will become democracy, and see CCP pays for what they have done.

[-] Psychological_Bed499 | 1 points | Jan 27 2022 21:16:32

[-] 0ffliner | 1 points | Jan 28 2022 09:58:42

Romanian here, the reality is unfortunately more grim and more complicated.

There were a lot of problems in Romania in the 80s, food stamps, limited food, restricted electricity usage, lack of liberty, government snitches etc. mostly because Nicolae Ceausescu(the dude on the right in the 19th pic), and his advisors, wanted to free Romania of debt, people were "ok" with that, "Ok, it is tough right now but after we pay the debt we will have food, electricity and all sorts of shit, right?". The answer was no, so they kinda got pissed, big time.

Meanwhile from the beginning of 1980s Nicolae Ceausescu's advisors wanted to get to power and were plotting to overthrow him. One of the main guys of the conspiracy was Ion Iliescu (Ceausescu right hand man), Romania's first president after the 1989 "revolution".

I'm writing "revolution" with quotation marks because most people believe that Iliescu was the guy behind the shootings in 1989. He didn't do the shootings but the Securitate (Romania's secret police at that time, nowadays they're called SRI), smart, cold blooded and quite dangerous people.

All the files recorded by Securitate at that time were burned, I wonder why...

Things were kinda like this: Romanian people are pissed off because they payed the international debt but don't have shit and their life quality is not as good as it used to be in the 1970s(because communist Romania was in the golden years around 1965-1978), Iliescu and his gang take the opportunity and tell Ceausescu to rise the army. The army is patrolling the streets; meanwhile Iliescu tells Securitate to shoot somebody (to kill) soldiers, citizens, police officers, it doesn't matter "just shoot them". Then the government says: "The hooligans are shooting the people", then Iliescu says on national television that Ceausescu has gone crazy, and orders to kill him and his wife.

Note:

Nicolae Ceausescu was actually a decent guy, although his wife was a cold dumbass bitch.

Romanian people did want to live like in "the west" (France, UK, USA, etc.) because anything that was western was better than the local Romanian products (electronic devices, clothes, junk food etc.), also lack of liberty, a lot of Romanians listened to Radio Free Europe and Voice of America.

(I'm here cuz somebody crossposted this post to Romanian subreddit)
