Taiwan’s sovereignty has been a disputed issue for centuries. Though the island sees itself as independent, China insists it is part of the People’s Republic and has not ruled out taking Taiwan by force

I don't think Taiwan is part of China. Neither is Beijing. Otherwise, why did China commit massacre on the Tiananmen Square of Beijing on 4 June 1989 and cover up subsequently? Why did China disrespect Taiwanese's lives? Any state shall place lives above sovereignty.
