为了表达其歉意，大西没有招请协助自杀的“介错”（即减少痛苦协助斩首之人），因此在切腹后15小时死亡。

言语： 勇士们，敌兵压境、帝国危在旦夕，如今决定日本命，不是那群酒囊饭袋的文官，也不是夸夸其谈的政客，而是你们，帝国的空中骄子！你们的血肉之躯定会使你们留名青史的。去吧，勇士们！ 愿天照大神保佑你们实现你们的誓言，一机换一舰，英名传千秋！

Dead blossoms

The ethereal transience and beauty of Japan’s cherry blossoms have long inspired poets and writers (“As the seasons defy norms/”, April 10th). But they were also used for inspiration of another kind by Takijiro Onishi, vice­admiral of the imperial Japanese navy during the second world war. In October 1944 he penned a haiku to inspire young Japanese Zero fighter pilots as they took off on their suicide­missions to crash dive into American ships:

In blossom today, then scattered Life is like a delicate flower How can one expect the fragrance to last for ever?
