Here's the deal. Daniel Bernoulli, the same guy who came up with the Venturi Effect and gave us the basic laws of aerodynamics, is the same guy who is responsible for the mid-air collision. As a retired USAF pilot who has flown both small and large airplanes doing supersonic formation and air refueling, I have had the opportunity to do a lot more with airplanes than most pilots will ever dream of and I am thankful for the opportunity to do so. That being said, when you fly close to another airplane, you get the down-wash off the wing along with other interrelated effects. Additionally the EP-3 is only flying at about 160 knots. Most fighter planes have an approach for landing speed of about 160 knots. When a fighter is flying in its approach speed range, it is handling like a pig in wallowing in mud. As the Chinese pilot moved forward, his fate was sealed without him even knowing it. With the wing of the EP-3 and the wing of the F-8 being imposed one on top of the other, he was literally sucked up due to the interrelated aerodynamic effects of the venturi he created by getting there and he was not able to control his wallowing pig of a plane and stop the closure of the two wings of the airplanes. The EP-3 is not a maneuverable plane. The pilot of the EP-3 could not have stopped the basic laws of aerodynamics either.
