十字架在基督徒眼裡並不神聖，只是贖罪的一個象徵，如果視十字架為神聖，那嚴重犯了基督教義裡的不可拜物這一點。耶穌被釘死的那一天，也有一個信他的人同他一起被釘在十字架上，信他的人說：耶穌啊，你的國降臨的時候，請紀念我；耶穌回道：我實在告訴你，今天你會和我一起在樂園之中了。可見如果基督徒以這個方式而殉道，在旁人眼裡是十分血腥且荒謬的，但基督徒會認為這樣死，是必定上天堂。

历史上讲很有可能是在当时的欧洲文化中，人们还保留着将敌人钉死在立柱上以示羞辱的传统，然后新约将此事当作一种表征，如果你信上帝那么这就是一种殉道，敌人的羞辱就失效了

在土耳其人的視角看，把基督徒釘死在十字架上完全出於羞辱，但反過來，基督徒會認為跟處死耶穌方式一樣而殉道，用聖經的話來說，這天堂是去定了的。因為信基督而死，會上天堂，況且還是以釘死在十字架上那或許會站在耶穌的旁邊了。
