“Hey, Atsushi, do you remember?”

My older sister asked me this after returning home for a bit.

“Remember what?”

“It’s probably been about 20 years now.”

What my sister began talking about was quite different to what I imagined.

After she brought it up, however, I slowly began to remember.

Yeah, that really did happen. Both my sister and I experienced something strange at that time.

I was only around five-years-old. We were going to watch a video together. I don’t remember what video it was. I think it was an anime or something. My sister put the tape in the deck and when she pressed play there was a dead woman’s body on the screen. The woman had collapsed and blood was pouring out of her head.

My sister and I exchanged glances.

“Wha… what’s this?”

My voice trembled. Perhaps we had gotten the wrong tape.

However, after about ten seconds the anime we were trying to watch started to play. Although we were scared, we tried rewinding the tape. We wanted to check what we’d just seen.

However, there was no sign whatsoever of the woman’s dead body we’d just seen. From the beginning of the tape, nothing played but the anime. I was so scared I burst out into tears. All the colour drained from my sister’s face.

… Why did I forget something so shocking?

Perhaps it’s not necessarily a lie that when something happens to a person that scares them so badly they forget about it in selfdefence. 20 years had passed since we saw that strange video. Then my sister said:

“Do you remember that video?”

“Ah, of course.”

“So, do you remember what the woman lying there looked like?

“Uhhh, I don’t really remember that much…”

“Well, I remember it very clearly.”

“Okay. And?”

“And these days I’ve been feeling more afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“The woman on the ground with blood coming out of her head. I’ve started to look a lot like her recently… I’m scared because it feels like soon I’m going to die just like that…”
