Today, a post on Twitter about the speech of Tianyou Yao, one of the PhD students at XYZ, has raised some concern for us. The tweet has multiple screenshots of highly extremist and possibly Nazism speech regarding the current situation in Ukraine from a WeChat (a Chinese majority real-time chat application) group. His speeches display an absence of respect toward human value, and hatred toward specific ethnic groups.

In summary, this person expresses that he wishes massacre on Ukraine civilians and support other war crimes along with military conflict and believes it would be more beneficial to his national (China) interest, as it would make a brutal example for the contemporary Taiwan issue.

As a U.S. citizen, I am really concerned about seeing such people among our top-tier academia and research faculty. And I thus have a reasonable suspicion about his true purpose residing in the U.S. since he talked about his “next steps” (in pic 3). Given this highly extremist and Nazism speech, as well as his loyalty toward Chinese national interest, I feel the urge to report this situation to related authorities. Today, a twitter post has caught attention of many people, revealing some very concerning speeches of Tianyou Yao who is a PhD student in UIUC biophysics. This tweet includes several screenshots of his comments on the current situation of Ukraine under Russian aggression on a group chat (WeChat, a common Chinese real chat application). His speeches are tremendously improper and can be associated with very extremist Nationalism, Fascism, and Nazism ideologies. From his speech, he has completely no empathy and is dismissive of the lives and basic human rights of the Ukraine people. Even worse, he shows maniac enthusiasm for the attack and zealous hopes for more war crimes and slaughtering more innocent civilians in the region. He believed that ruthless, brutal massacres and bloodsheds conducted by the Russian military can be an ideal exhibition to cause fear and distress for people in Taiwan as he fanatically believes this would be “helpful” for People’s Republic of China in a potential future war toward them. He believes that the implementation of massive destruction weaponry and the acts of indiscriminate attack, as military practices, are essential to the national interest of both Russia and China in present and future.

To summarise, Tianyou Yao’s speeches and opinions are inappropriate, outrageous, distressing, and dangerous. These comments have completely broken the limit of free speech and challenges the common values and common senses of our society. I believe they also contradict the value of your institutions and the bottom line of morality as a academic researcher in a top-tier institutions. I therefore have reasonable suspicion of his true intentions in residing the US considering this extremist views and zealous loyalty to the Chinese national interest. I also have worries over his potential negative influences to other researchers and students. Hence, I feel the urge to notify the related institutions and authorities and thus writing this email to share my concerns.

4. How did they bypass the background checks of DOS/DHS and got their student visas? Have they cheated on their DS-160 by not reporting their communist party/communist youth membership? Have those government agencies done their job?

5. What UIUC/U.S. university/DHS and related agencies should do on their admitting criteria, to prevent such thing from happening again?

Few other suggestions: 1. Spread the message on more social media, such as LinkedIn. @ UIUC especially students/faculties from Ukraine, and the department dean and his advisor.

1. It’s not just this guy, but those who are one of “us”.

Due to the huge interest of international students, which is especially true on the U.S. universities flooded by Chinese F-1 students such as UIUC, Columbia, etc. their public relationship team will probably try to put the thing under and let it die down, so they can continue doing their business. This is also true for California tech companies with heavy business ties with China. Few years ago I was put into some sort of “peace agreement” with my company, to keep quiet. I don’t work for them anymore so I don’t give a damn of their PR so I can speak freely and give some advise.

Let me know if you need help and I’ll more than willing to do so if I’m free.

Your school has long history and good reputation in the world. I do not think your school and faculty share his opinion. However, more and more people saw his speech on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and reddit, which is fermenting online. A number of people really want to know that is his speech allowed or educated by you?

The name of your school and his professor may be associated with his hate speech.

I do believe your school should not only educates students on knowledge, but also help them to be a decent a human being before they become experts.
