今天，Wrighton校长针对海报事件的回应引起了在校中国学生的强烈反响。我们希望校领导层能认真看待此次事件对在校中国留学生及更广泛的亚裔群体造成的伤害，平等对待中国学生的合理诉求。 联名信将于今晚发送至校长及各级校领导，现全文如下：

Petition on a Discriminatory Poster 关于歧视性海报的联名信

On February 3rd, 2022, the Asian community of the George Washington University (GWU) was severely hurt by the poster irresponsibly associating the widespread of COVID-19 virus with China. There were multiple posters seen in different places around the campus, one of them presented a curling player wearing the Chinese flag shirt, with a COVID-19 virus replacing the curling stone under the hand of the athlete. As signees, we respect the freedom of speech and political expressions. However, we believe this particular poster was irresponsibly created and distributed, lacking the basic racial sensitivity we should have in a higher education institute. We are deeply shocked by the sense of indifference dismissing our basic racial justice appeals. We, the signees, urge the school to follow its COVID-19 guidance on related bias & discrimination and prevent further damage to the feelings of the Asian student community.

GWU is a very politically active community, and that characteristic has become one of our greatest strengths in building future leaders for the world. In order to create a welcoming and inclusive community, we need responsible political activism. However, this image clearly carries information that causes misinterpretation and could lead to hate, discrimination, and bias against not only the Chinese students, but also other Asian students in the GW community. With such a misleading image, the hidden meaning behind the poster is subjected to interpretations and can definitely resonate with sinophobia sentiments—-which is a well-documented phenomenon that has existed for centuries in the US. One passerby seeing such an image could easily associate the poster with the term “Chinese virus,” which is a frequent term in stigmatization of Chinese communities and conspiracy theories of the pandemic. It also puts all other Asian student communities in danger since many people in the US today, unfortunately, still may not distinguish between different Asian groups. Furthermore, this misleading poster showing a Chinese athlete pushing the virus forward, could promote hatred towards the Chinese and other Asian students for spreading the virus. Therefore, the risk of Asian students being racially discriminated against has severely increased. We respect freedom of speech and freedom of expression, but this poster irresponsibly blame the widespread of COVID-19 on China is, indeed, an act of discrimination. The expression of this poster serve as an inflammatory remark. The poster is not in line with the values GW upholds and its commitment to promote diversity and inclusion. It also demonstrates that GW fails to provide a sense of security for vulnerable communities during the pandemic.

The presence of this poster is making a large number of Asian students feel uncomfortable and unsafe. We condemn this hurtful poster image that could contribute to the promotion of hate against Chinese and other Asian students. Now, we would like to invite students, faculty, staff, and the GW Leadership to join us to unequivocally condemn racism and xenophobia. Moreover, we urge the University to conduct a thorough investigation and offer a statement that supports GW's values of diversity and inclusion. This incident created a hostile environment that helps foster more discrimination and harassment against the Asian community. The traditionally underrepresented Chinese and other Asian groups should not be constantly overlooked and certainly do not deserve unfair treatment due to unhealthy political tensions. Furthermore, considering recent disturbing racial incidents that happened on our campus, GW still has a long way to go to promote diversity and inclusion at our university. We, the signees, would like to see the University take substantial steps to first, recognize this incident involves discrimination and hatred; second, take measures to prevent such incidents of discrimination from happening again in the future; and last but not least, expand diversity and inclusion programs and provide more opportunities for students to learn about other cultures and identities.

Our GW campus should not tolerate any hate and discriminatory acts against minority groups. Do not allow ignorance and blatant racism to become a part of the school culture. Dear GW admins, if your initial glimpse of this particular poster determined it is inappropriate and offensive, it’s because it is. The political message behind this poster unilaterally stated by its creator does not justify its misleading nature. We urge you to be more racially sensitive. This is 2022. In years of growing attention to racial injustice, political activism should not come at the expense of a group’s racial equality. We regret that the President made his statement without seeing this clearly. We hope the racial values that we all cherish and embrace will not just become sanctimonious ethics that cannot withstand a single blow.

乔治华盛顿大学校园不应容忍任何针对少数群体的仇恨和歧视行为。请不要让无知和明目张胆的种族主义成为学校文化的一部分。敬爱的乔治华盛顿大学领导层，如果你第一眼看到这张海报就认定它是不恰当的且令人反感的，无需多想，因为它的确就是。这张海报背后的政治信息并不能为其误导性的本质开脱。我们敦促学校增加种族问题的敏感度。这已经是2022年了，这是一个种族正义需要受到重视的时代。政治行动不应该以牺牲一个群体的种族平等为代价。很遗憾，校长先生在没有看清这一点的情况下发表了他的声明。大家常常把种族平等挂在嘴边，我们希望这一我们共同珍惜并拥护的主张不会在此次事件中变得不堪一击，沦落成一个伪善的价值观。
